Issue 5, November 2008
Welcome
It has continued to be hectic as we head towards Christmas. Can you believe that 2008 is nearly over and there’s still so much to do before we go on holidays.
AHCSA has welcomed more new staff. Anna Leditschke has returned as the ATSIHRTONN Coordinator. You may have noticed an extra letter in the title. At the last meeting, members decided to add national to the name to better reflect their focus. They are now called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Registered Training Organisation National Network - ATSIHRTONN.
As Anna settles back into AHCSA and her new role, one of her tasks is to fill the Project Officer and Admin Assistant positions. We expect the successful candidates to start in January.
Also new to AHCSA is Yvonne Helps and Harold Stewart. Yvonne started in October as the Research Assistant for the CRCAH funded Chronic Disease Project. This is an exciting project that AHCSA is undertaking in partnership with Flinders University.
Harold started in November as the Statewide Tobacco Control Project Officer. Many of you would remember Harold from the Aboriginal Health Division (AHD) and Mental Health Branch.
You will hear more about these new projects in coming editions of AHCSA News.
We also said goodbye to Sean Taylor and Regina Williams. Sean left the Education & Training Team to take up an appointment in renal disease research in NSW. Regina completed the AHW Registration Project and returned to Central Northern Adelaide Health Service. AHCSA wishes them both well.
AHCSA would like to say farewell to Jackie AhKit. Jackie is leaving CHSA to take up a position with Territory Health Services. AHCSA has enjoyed a good working relationship with Jackie and her team. We wish Jackie and her family all the best with their move.
AHCSA also welcomes Rob Zadow to his new role as Executive Director Aboriginal Health.

New Premises
AHCSA is moving to 9 King William Road, Unley. The new premises are bigger and we will be able to conduct training onsite with a new clinic room for students to practice their new skills. Board meetings can also be held onsite as there is a much larger boardroom. We expect to move around 19 January.
Health Minister Workshop
On 20 November, AHCSA held a workshop with Minister John Hill, Tony Sherbon, CEO Department of Health and Richard King, Acting Executive Director AHD. This was a very useful meeting to look at how we can work more effectively together. It was agreed that we would continue to meet quarterly to progress operational and policy issues. We would like to acknowledge Minister Hill’s ongoing support for AHCSA.
AMIC Resources
AHCSA received funding from the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) to develop learning resources for Aboriginal Maternal & Infant Care (AMIC) electives for the new national Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) qualifications. The resources were requested by Country Health SA (CHSA) to support AMIC Workers in their region as part of the Anangu Bibi Program.
The resources have been completed and look wonderful. I would like to thank everyone involved in the development. If you would like further information, please contact Andy Merrigan or Graham Williams in the Education & Training Team, tel: (08) 8132 6705.
Public Health Workshop Outcomes
Following the joint ICT/IM and Public Health Workshop in July, AHCSA has appointed Jerry Moller to work with members on the development of a statewide ICT/IM strategy.
In addition, Dr David Scrimgeour has been working with AHCSA members to establish a Public Health Network.
NACCHO Update
NACCHO held its 2008 Annual General Meeting and Members Conference in Broome on 10 to 14 November. The meeting coincided with Broome Aboriginal Medical Service’s (BRAMS) 30 year anniversary celebrations. Congratulations to BRAMS. The next AGM will be held in Darwin.
An exciting project that NACCHO is working on currently is the development of a New Architecture for the Delivery of Aboriginal Health.
The aim of this project is to look at developing a new approach to Aboriginal health in order for real improvements to be made to the health of our communities. The current way that health is managed and delivered through governments is not working.
NACCHO is working with State Affiliates and members to develop a position paper to be presented to the Council of Australian Governments. The project is being undertaken by the Queensland Aboriginal & Islander Health Council (QAIHC) on behalf of NACCHO. I will keep you informed of progress.
AHCSA AGM
AHCSA’s AGM and Board meeting will be held in Ceduna on 2-3 December. Our 2007/08 Annual Report will be available at the AGM.
