Tom Calma heads line-up of keynote speakers at the 4th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Male Health Convention Hyatt Regency Adelaide, October 1-2

Tom Calma, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and National Race Discrimination Commissioner heads the keynote speaker line-up of some of Australia’s most well known Indigenous leaders at the 4th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Male Health Convention, Hyatt Regency Adelaide on October 1-2.

The Convention, which is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, will also hear from:

  • Assistant Secretary, Office of Aboriginal Health, Family & Social Policy, NT Department of Health and Community Services – Dr Shane Houston
  • Chairperson, National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation – Henry Councillor
  • WuChopperen Aboriginal Health Service, Cairns – Dr Mark Wenitong
  • Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation – Jimi Peters Jnr

Professor Peter Buckskin will be the Master of Ceremonies and facilitate the Feedback Forum, Question & Answer Panel, and Convention Recommendations.

The Convention theme will be based on the National Framework for Improving the Health and Wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Males 2004. Keynote speakers will address:

  • National Strategies that Impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • New Policies & Programs Impacting on Male Health
  • Indigenous Male Sexual Health
  • Priorities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health to Consider for Future Initiatives
  • Workforce Development Issues to Ensure a Gender Balance in ATSI Health Services

The 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, which gave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the right to vote for the first time, will be addressed by keynote speakers in view of “... what has it meant, and what could it deliver for Aboriginal male health and wellbeing in the next 40 years?”

Indigenous artists, Sonny Keeler, The MERRg, and Glen Skuthorpe will entertain guests at the Convention dinner. Kurruru Boys will provide entertainment during lunch on Tuesday, 2 October.
