COAG Event 2011 - Meet the Mob Doing the Job

The 'Closing the Health Gap in SA – Meet the Mob Doing the Job' Expo, held 28-29 June 2011 at the Stamford Grand Hotel in Glenelg was a collaborative effort of the Operational Working Group (OWG), a subcommittee of IAG with representatives from the Department of Health and Ageing, SA Health, the Aboriginal Health Council of SA, General Practice SA and Rural Doctors Workforce Agency. A total of 233 delegates attended.

Aims and objectives of the Expo:

  • Provide opportunities for the sharing of information about the health programs and initiatives funded through the SA Implementation Plan of the COAG National Partnership on Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health Outcomes, the Indigenous Early Childhood Development National Partnership and the Commonwealth Government’s Chronic Disease Package;

  • Enable the development of networks and the strengthening of cooperation and collaboration amongst staff;

  • Identify potential for integration of services and the development of partnerships. Programs and initiatives of health service providers external to COAG funding but with relevance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community participated in the Expo where opportunities could be made available.

The Expo program featured a number of keynote addresses, the display of programs in a market place, a range of presentations and workshops led by program staff and regional discussion forums for regional networking. A delegate booklet has further been provided with information about COAG funded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health programs.

Informal feedback received from Expo delegates as well as VIP presenters and keynote speakers was very positive with appreciation for the initiative to hold the first Aboriginal Health Expo across all jurisdictions as well as the professionalism in organising and running the event. Delegates reported on the development of networks as a direct result of the Expo and the cooperation of staff across the Aboriginal health sector. Delegates strongly expressed their interest in ongoing opportunities to meet, share information and develop partnerships. The program of the event was well received and organisations appreciated the opportunity to showcase their achievements.
