Issue 4, September 2008

Welcome

Mary Buckskin, CEO for AHCSAAHCSA remains very busy as we head into the new financial year. Our new staff settled quickly into their positions and others have been appointed. We are currently advertising for an ATSIHRTON Coordinator (see below), so if you know of anyone who would enjoy this position, please let them know.

Chris Rektsinis, Senior Administration Officer, has gone overseas to Greece, and has been replaced by Shay Conder on a temporary basis. AHCSA welcomes Yvonne Helps as the new Research Assistant ‘Chronic condition management strategies for Aboriginal Communities’ (more on her position below) and says goodbye to Ruth Miller who filled the ATSIHRTON Coordinator position on a short-term basis from Canberra. We would like to say a big thank you to Ruth and wish her well in her new position with Families SA.

AHCSA is close to finalising a contract for our new building and we hope to let you all know where it is in a couple of weeks when negotiations are complete. Stay tuned!

If you have any queries about CEO Communiqué, please contact Mandy Green or Angela Francisco on (08) 8132 6700, mandy.green@ahcsa.org.au or angela.francisco@ahcsa.org.au

ATSIHRTON
AHCSA has successfully negotiated a 3-year funding agreement with the Department of Health and Ageing for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Registered Training Organisation Network (ATSIHRTON).

We are currently seeking applications for the National Coordinator position by COB Friday 12 September.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, the successful applicant will contribute to the achievement, objectives and policies of the AHCSA by supporting the AHCSA Strategic Plan, the implementation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework, and the ATSIHRTON Strategic and Business Plan. Research Assistant
Yvonne Helps has been appointed to the role of Research Assistant ‘Chronic condition management strategies for Aboriginal Communities’. She is responsible for the provision of quality research support for the ‘Chronic condition management strategies for Aboriginal Communities’ project. Yvonne will assist the Chief Investigators and participating health services to obtain ethics approvals for the project, develop data collection tools and protocols, facilitate collaboration with partner organisations, collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative project data, liaise with participating services and communities, implement chronic condition management strategies, draft reports and disseminate information, and maintain the administrative requirements associated with the project.

Statewide Aboriginal Tobacco Project
AHCSA is pleased to announce that we have secured funding for 3-years to appoint a Statewide Aboriginal Tobacco Coordinator. This position will be advertised soon in the newspaper and on our website.

GP Plus Taskforce
As a result of AHCSA’s response to the Country Health SA Plan, AHCSA CEO Mary Buckskin, has been appointed to the GP PlusTaskforce.

The Plan was released in July 2008 by the Minister of Health for comment and feedback. A key focus is on changing the role and services of country hospitals.

Following ‘lots of public outcry’ to the changes, there has been a change of direction by the Minister of Health. The Taskforce will oversee the implementation of the 43 GP Plus Emergency Hospitals, assess the submissions received by Government to identify key priority or focus areas and act as a resource to help local communities in health care planning. Aboriginal health is one of the focus areas.
